This pink and green ikat kimono was sewn in a small workshop that employs women who have been rescued from human trafficking as well as at-risk women from the slums. Many of these women have been kidnapped or sold to brothels as little girls by their own families. The factory's mission is to empower these survivors by providing free training in valuable skill that gives them the independence to thrive. They also provide housing assistance, therapy, and fair wages.
Ikat is unusual in that the ikat design is created in the threads in the dyeing process by tying the yarn and dipping it in the pigments. Afterwards the threads are lined up on a handloom to create the desired pattern before they are woven together. It is a painstaking process that takes a lot of time and precision and no electricity is used.
